Do you want to Volunteer?

All our volunteer opportunities are available upon need. However, some opportunities require the state certified 40-hour training program, and some others also require an additional Maitri training before you can begin. Opportunities are listed by the type of training required.

40-hour training and Maitri training required.

Advocacy

Volunteer accompanying a client will play the role of an advocate. You might need to accompany a client to social service offices, enroll in school, hospital appointments, legal appointments, or to the court. This role is very critical especially for clients who are monolingual or new immigrants to the United States.

Volunteer playing an accompanying role will work with very closely with the client and will be supervised by the transitional house coordinator.

Outreach events

Outreach events are a key way to make our information and resources available to the community. Many people do not know where to turn for help, or the options available to them. By attending health, safety and resource fairs, we are able to provide individuals with the information they need. We are always looking for outreach volunteers, especially on weekdays. These events come to us by request from organizations in the community, and are held at all different times of the day and of the week. You can choose the events to participate based on your schedule.

Public Speaking

Presenters are needed for speaking (in various S. Asian languages) at various community groups about the services of Maitri and domestic violence in general. This includes a special training on public speaking by the Maitri president.

Teaching English

Teach English to the clients at the Maitri transitional home as fluency in English is the first step for immigrant women towards self-empowerment. This activity has to be organized around the client’s schedule.

Tutoring

Assist women with studying for exams for school and/or training. Must be patient with a positive attitude; extremely dependable, and available at least 2-3 times a week during the evenings.

Homework Tutoring

Assist children at the Maitri transitional home with homework. Must be patient with a positive attitude; extremely dependable, and available at least 2-3 times a week during the evenings.

Fun activities for Maitri clients

Organize creative, fun activities for the women at the Maitri transitional home. The activities can be organized once a week (weekend or weekday) or once a month. The activities could include cooking gourmet food, picnic in the park, going to movies, meditation/exercise, etc.

Advisory Committee Members

People with experience in working with other organizations, a wide network of contacts in the S. Asian community, and substantial fundraising experience can join Maitri’s advisory committee. Approximate time commitment: once a quarter.

Marketing and Communications Projects

Update Maitri literature including brochures, flyers, website, handouts, translations etc. Project schedule is flexible.

Consulting Opportunities

Provide human resource, legal, or economic-empowerment experience to clients as needed. Time commitment is flexible.

Fund Development

Help the Maitri car donation program including public relations, logistics, and strategy for the program. Time commitment is flexible.

Event Planning

Maitri does several fundraising and awareness raising/educational programs a year. Help with organizing and running the events. Time commitment is flexible.

Clerical/general/other

·    Training in professional skills, CPR, time-management, etc.

·    Manual labor (lifting, sorting items, cleaning, etc)

·    Data entry

·    Other opportunities as they arise.
